The title is one of the ancient names for Chalice Well in Glastonbury, which was also once called the Red Spring. The waters are heavy in iron and this causes the channels they run through to be coloured red, hence the names. Chalice Well has been a sacred site and place of pilgrimage for millennia.

It is said that you can scry into other worlds and see the thousandfold path of your future by meditating on the waters in the well itself.

Bloodwell was written in 1997 as part of the Lady of the Lake album journey which Jana and I undertook over a period of nine days around the sacred landscape of Avalon, now known as Glastonbury.
